Same as with the potatoes, I am trying two different methods with the carrots. The first method is my carrots to win the allotment show this year (fingers crossed), I've planted them in a old bin that I've inherited with the plot.
I've mixed some soil with grit sand from the allotment shop, filled the bin and compacted it as much as I could. Then using a drain pipe I've removed a cylinder of the sand/soil mix and filled them with some multi purpose compost. Once the cylinder was filled with compost I've planted a couple of seeds at the top to thin out once the plants come up.
If things goes as they promised on the internet, I'll have award winning show carrots :)
And the I've planted some carrots straight into the soil.
I've hired the rotavator from the shop to loosen the soil, what a machine! It took some to get the motor going, but once it was going it was ploughing trough the soil like a warm knife in butter.
The kids as always loved getting their hands dirty and stuck in.
